Surflight Theatre
invites the community to step into the spotlight on October 9th
BEACH HAVEN, NJ
Monday, October 4, 2010 — You’ve heard the story - now Surflight Theatre wants to hear from YOU!On Saturday, October 9th from 10:00am to 12:00pm, Surflight Theatre will host a town meeting to take questions and thoughts from the community. As previously announced, the not-for-profit theatre must raise $500,000 by October 31st or the doors to the 61 year old theatre will be forced to close. The public is invited to meet with the theatre’s newly appointed Producing Artistic Director Roy Miller, along with Board President Gene Hammond and the Surflight Board of Trustees and staff. In a recent statement, Hammond said “we encourage any and all questions from the community as we reorganize and try to get the theatre back on solid financial footing.” Miller plans to reveal his initial plans for next season as well as initiatives that have already been implemented to keep costs under control. “We have a lot of exciting plans in store for everyone next season, but we need to get there first,” said Miller. “This crisis is very real, but when we get through it, Surflight has the opportunity to be one of the top not-for-profit theatres in the country. That is what we are asking everyone to invest in – not a sinking ship.” Miller, who has a long list of Broadway producing credits to his name including the recent West Side Story revival, is no stranger to the not-for-profit arena, having produced over 80 shows at Paper Mill Playhouse back in its heyday.Surflight Theatre has served the community for over 60 years, and now YOU have the opportunity to play a starring role in making sure that the Theatre continues to entertain audiences and educate artists for generations to come.For more information, visit www.surflight.org.

Visiting Artist / Teacher: Yvonne Yaar

The glass-working technique know as “fusing” involves melting pieces of glass
(layered on top of one another) together in a kiln at tempatures typically in excess of 1200º F. The end result is a new piece of glass. In jewelry making, we will focus on pendants or earrings, whichever the student chooses. THe techniques for design, cutting glass, grinding it for shaping and smooth edges- all part of the process taught and discussed in class. You can ask questions for more detailed information or just sit back and enjoy the process.

*** Each piece is taken to Yvonne's studio for the kiln process. Therefore allow a week for pick up unless other special arrangements are made with the artist (pick up sooner, different location, mailing to your home address for $7 fee, etc) You will be given a small tube of high quality craft/glass glue and will be responsible for attaching your jewelry bails. These bails are included with the cost of the class, no additional purchases necessary.

About the Artist: Simply put, Yvonne has a passion for glass. She became a full time artist approximately 4 years ago. She has taken classes at Salem Community College in Carney's Pt, NJ; one of the few entities in the USA that offers a Bachelor's Degree in Glass Art. She was on the Dean's list when she attended and she also took a class at Urban Glass in Brooklyn, NY. However, she is primarily self-taught. She has a BS from Indiana University in Interior Design, with a minor in Business Administration. She exhibits and sells from multiple galleries, museums, and boutiques in the Tri-State area {NY, NJ, &PA]. In 2009, Yvonne was honored by The Monmouth Museum as one of "New Jersey's Emerging Artists".

Monmouth County Arts Council Announces the Arts Education Awards (Red Bank, NJ) The Monmouth County Arts Council announces the Arts Education Awards to be held at Two River Theater Company, Bridge Street, Red Bank, on Monday May 17, 2010 from 6-8:00 pm. An annual event, this is an exciting evening for students, parents, teachers and community arts supporters to come together to acknowledge the power of art education and to honor the awardees. The Monmouth County Arts Council established the Arts Education Awards to recognize and celebrate Leaders in Arts Education, Community Arts Education Leaders and Community Champions of the Arts, tho se individuals and organizations who support the council's mission of "enriching the community by inspiring and fostering the arts." This year, one Leader in Arts Education is Mychelle Kendrick, visual arts teacher, Wall High School, who is an educator, creator and dynamic promoter/organizer/motivator for all of the arts at Wall High School. She has created an atmosphere of art learning in her classroom for all students all the time. The Visual and Performing Arts Department (VPA) of Red Bank Regional High School drama teacher Joe Russo will also be honored as a Leader in Arts Education for his commitment to excellence in drama. He has been teaching Theater at RBRVPA since 1983 when the program began. Dan Green will receive a Leader in Arts Education as an Arts Administrator as Supervisor of the innovative Fine and Performing Arts Center (FPAC) of Freehold Regional School District, at Howell High School. The FPAC program includes acting, dance and entertainment technology and celebrated its 25th anniversary last year. One Community Champion of the Arts is Monmouth University in recognition of its support to revitalize the State Teen Arts Festival, and especially the efforts of President Gaffney in bringing the festival to Monmouth University the last week of May. The second Community Champion of the Arts is New Jersey Natural Gas for their long time support of the Monmouth County Teen Arts Festival.
The third award category is Community Arts Education Leaders. A collaboration between VSA New Jersey and ARC of Monmouth County, Red Horse Gallery, offers "life long learning in the arts for people with disabilities" and will be honored as a Community Arts Education Leader for its ongoing educational programs and gallery opportunities in the arts. The Two River Theater Company's education programs, led by Kate Cordaro, Director of Arts Education, will receive recognition for a program that "embraces the power of creativity with the philosophy that art changes lives". The Arts Education Awards reception will highlight several talented students in visual arts, musical arts and theater from the county Teen Arts Festival. Charles, who teaches television production at the Senior Citizens Activities Network (SCAN) at the Monmouth Mall, has been a major behind-the-scenes force in the creation of a host of positive social changes through the empowerment of community and the arts with his ability to convey his wealth of proven knowledge. He has sparked great breakthroughs for businesses, government agencies, and non-profit organizations.

"Cable Access TV: How to Use It's Power to Expand Your Communications Footprint", a free seminar led by master teacher, artist and author Charles Burke, at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 25, at The ShowRoom Theater, 708 Cookman Ave., Asbury Park. Vernacular Photography

Vernacular Photography refers to images taken by anonymous photographers, using everyday objects, people, and scenes as their subject. These photos are considered “accidental art” in that they are often unintentionally artistic. Vernacular photos can be collected “as is”, or used to create compelling new works of art.

On Friday, May 7^th at 7:00 p.m., Steve Bannos – actor, comedian, writer, and internationally renowned dealer of Vernacular Photography – will appear at the Toms River Branch of the Ocean County Library. Best known for his portrayal of teacher Frank Kowchevski on NBC’s Freaks and Geeks, Bannos has also appeared in the films Superbad, Unaccompanied Minors, and The 40-Year-Old Virgin. His skills as a Hollywood copywriter have earned him the nickname of “the Comedy Doctor”, and his Vernacular Photography collection – which currently numbers over 825,000 snapshots – has appeared in books, museums, films, album covers, and private art collections worldwide. 12:30 – 1:45 pm and 3:00 – 4:30 pm Hand Prints Children will trace their hands on cardboard, decorate them and write about themselves on their hands. All hands will be glued on canvas that will be displayed.
Group Story Project
Children will add their own imaginative words and ideas to a group story, which will be displayed. A facilitator will help guide the children develop their ideas.

Individual Art
1:00 – 2:45 pm and 3:00 – 4:30 pm Recycled Art Projects Using plastic bottles and caps, children will make sculptures, shakers, vases, and paperweights to take home. Demo models will be available for ideas.
2:00 – 2:45 pm Audrey Davis the African Dance Lady Audrey, along with live African drumming, will do “A Taste of Africa,” geared for for children of all ages.

Evening Programs
4:00 – 5:15 pm - Monmouth Winds
This woodwind quintet featuring members of the Monmouth Symphony Orchestra (flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, French horn) will offer light classical and other familiar tunes for young and old, plus a demonstration of the indi- vidual instruments.
6:30 – 7:30 pm - Kathryn Barnett’s School of Dance
Students from this Red Bank dance school will do solo, duo, and group perfor- mances covering Ballet, Lyrical Dance, Tap and Jazz styles.

Bus Trip to America Museum in NYC

BUS TRIP TO THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE IN NYC
The TV class at the SCAN Adult Continuing Education Center, located in Monmouth Mall, will be taking a bus trip the the American Museum of the Moving Image in New York City on Friday March 26. The program will include a private tour of the museum plus special activities for the group. The group will learn about the history as well as modern film & video techniques.
The cost of the trip, which includes the bus and museum admission, is $35. The bus is a full size coach with an on-board toilet facility. It will leave SCAN at 8:30 AM and return around 3 PM. Lunch is “brown bag” and will be eaten while on the bus. On- going expansion work has temporarily closed their food service at the museum.

Bayonet Farm-Spring- Art Classes

Come celebrate spring at Bayonet Farm. The beautiful gardens – both painted and real – will provide plenty of inspiration for participants at these one day workshops and lectures. People of all skill levels are welcome so, even if you have never painted before, come take advantage of this great opportunity to learn from some of the best landscape artists around.
