'Wolf at the Door'
Story deals with artist Paul Gauguin's return to Paris from
Tahiti in 1893,
and his subsequent trip back to Tahiti.
At first sight as he struts haughtily through the streets of Paris
beneath a broad-brimmed straw hat, behind a macho mustache,
throwing a small secret smile to a pretty girl along his route,
Donald Sutherland's Paul Gauguin might be returning in triumph
from his two years in Tahiti. But the hat is ratty as well as natty,
the way his paintings are loaded on the cart being trundled before
him hints that not everybody considers them masterpieces,
and his eyes carry anxiety as well as arrogance. We soon learn that he
has only four francs in his pocket.
