Looking for Exhibition Space?
The Holmdel Theatre Company is seeking to support local artists by displaying their work in our lobby. The next upcoming show is HOUSE AND GARDEN which runs July 15 through 30. and DROP DEAD which runs November 4 through 12.
We would love to have the artist come to look at the space and set their pieces up as they would like them displayed. Our lobby does not have a lot of wall space. We display on several small easels set up on a large table. The easels hold pieces up to about 2 feet wide / tall comfortably, but we may be able to accommodate some larger pieces by purchasing additional easels. In the past we have displayed between 6 to 8 pieces. We have made up signs with the artist's name, personal statement & purchasing information. We also include this information in the program as well.
Work can be for sale. The Theatre is not requesting a commission.
An effort is made to match the theme of the play with the artist's theme when possible. HOUSE AND GARDEN, anything that you might see displayed in a very traditional, upscale British house. For DROP DEAD, we can go modern and funky.
Full insurance on the building which is kept locked unless a member of the Board of Directors is there.

Monday, October 4, 2010 — You’ve heard the story - now Surflight Theatre wants to hear from YOU!On Saturday, October 9th from 10:00am to 12:00pm, Surflight Theatre will host a town meeting to take questions and thoughts from the community. As previously announced, the not-for-profit theatre must raise $500,000 by October 31st or the doors to the 61 year old theatre will be forced to close. The public is invited to meet with the theatre’s newly appointed Producing Artistic Director Roy Miller, along with Board President Gene Hammond and the Surflight Board of Trustees and staff. In a recent statement, Hammond said “we encourage any and all questions from the community as we reorganize and try to get the theatre back on solid financial footing.” Miller plans to reveal his initial plans for next season as well as initiatives that have already been implemented to keep costs under control. “We have a lot of exciting plans in store for everyone next season, but we need to get there first,” said Miller. “This crisis is very real, but when we get through it, Surflight has the opportunity to be one of the top not-for-profit theatres in the country. Library Art Reception Honors State Folk Legend

TOMS RIVER – On Thursday, October 14th, the Ocean County Library will host an art reception for “Visions of the Jersey Devil”, a group exhibit honoring the 275th birthday of New Jersey’s favorite mythical mascot.

The exhibit showcases imaginative portraits of the Jersey Devil created by eight local artists. Artworks range in style from traditional to modern to comic-book. Many poke affectionate fun at the popular folk legend, while others draw inspiration from historic eyewitness accounts.

Visitors to the Toms River Branch on October 14th are invited to join the fun in McConnell from 6:00-8:00 pm. Activities will include trivia, audiovisual presentations, and refreshments—including a “275th Birthday Cake” for the Jersey Devil.

Originating in 1735, the legend of the Jersey Devil has fascinated the Garden State for close to three centuries. Hundreds of state residents claim to have seen the Jersey Devil in its natural habitat, the Pine Barrens. After decades of notoriety, “Mother Leeds’ 13th Child” has earned the loyalty of many New Jersey natives, who view the creature as an enduring state symbol.

Visiting Artist / Teacher: Yvonne Yaar

The glass-working technique know as “fusing” involves melting pieces of glass
(layered on top of one another) together in a kiln at tempatures typically in excess of 1200º F. The end result is a new piece of glass. In jewelry making, we will focus on pendants or earrings, whichever the student chooses. THe techniques for design, cutting glass, grinding it for shaping and smooth edges- all part of the process taught and discussed in class. You can ask questions for more detailed information or just sit back and enjoy the process.

*** Each piece is taken to Yvonne's studio for the kiln process. Therefore allow a week for pick up unless other special arrangements are made with the artist (pick up sooner, different location, mailing to your home address for $7 fee, etc) You will be given a small tube of high quality craft/glass glue and will be responsible for attaching your jewelry bails. These bails are included with the cost of the class, no additional purchases necessary.

About the Artist: Simply put, Yvonne has a passion for glass. She became a full time artist approximately 4 years ago. She has taken classes at Salem Community College in Carney's Pt, NJ; one of the few entities in the USA that offers a Bachelor's Degree in Glass Art. She was on the Dean's list when she attended and she also took a class at Urban Glass in Brooklyn, NY. However, she is primarily self-taught. She has a BS from Indiana University in Interior Design, with a minor in Business Administration. She exhibits and sells from multiple galleries, museums, and boutiques in the Tri-State area {NY, NJ, &PA]. In 2009, Yvonne was honored by The Monmouth Museum as one of "New Jersey's Emerging Artists".

Singers Wanted 2010 Sinatra Birthday Bash

The Sinatra Birthday Bash is a musical celebration of Frank Sinatra in honor of what would have been his 95th birthday. Eight to ten of New Jersey's finest saloon singers, selected specifically for this show, will take the stage of the historic Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, NJ, backed by the Red Bank Jazz Orchestra. The RBJO is a 17-piece professional Big Band under the musical direction of Joe Muccioli, who Jazzwise Magazine says works with, "A maximum of authenticity." The Sinatra Birthday Bash is not a costume and wig show. It's a sincere, respectful tribute in song to one of NJ's most famous sons. Those of you selected, no doubt the finest singers working in NJ today, will sing the great songs of the American Songbook, and many of the tunes associated with Sinatra during his long career.
AUDITION & SHOW INFO: This year a brand new cast of featured vocalists, plus a possible back-up singing group that we call "the Sinatra Guys and Dolls," will be selected for the show. Males, females, small vocal ensembles and talented performers of all ages are encouraged to apply. Each featured vocalist will perform two songs (one on each set) w/ the band, & participate in the opening number & the finale. Performers must attend rehearsals with the Musical Director as needed, & a whole cast staging rehearsal with piano accompaniment on a date TBA, & the dress rehearsal at 2:00 PM on Friday, December 10, 2010 & the show on the same date at 8:00 PM. Featured vocalists will receive an honorarium of $250 per singer or ensemble. Backup singers will receive $100 per singer. Audition is by CD (not in person).

Many students are familiar with Flash games found on gaming websites and now they have an opportunity to learn just how those games are created! Using Flash animation skills and employing a variety of Actionscript coding techniques, students can create a game of their own or a game using Small Factory characters.

Session 1: One week of classes, July 5 - 9, 2010, 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Tuesday evenings for 6 weeks starting July 6, 2010

Instructor: Laura Gesin always enjoyed board games as a child. When she was in middle school, Atari released Pong and she was hooked on video games! Space Invaders and Missile Command soon took up most of Laura’s time, and she admits her grades may have suffered in college due to Asteroids. After earning an English degree, she worked in marketing for almost a decade before going back to school to pursue a career in computer programming. She spent some time in corporate America but took advantage of the internet boom of the 90s to take hers skills online. There she discovered the world of online gaming and it wasn’t long before she learned Flash and was creating her own games. When the internet bubble burst, Laura turned to teaching. At Communications High School in Wall, NJ, she’s taught everything from Web Design to Game Programming in Flash, and now she’s bringing her expertise and love of gaming to Small Factory Productions!

To support wounded Soldiers and other heroes returning home from the battlefield, International Arts Movement and Reflections of Generosity are working together to create a CD with songs about restoration and healing by recording artists Christa Wells, Christy Tennant, Kyla Kelsey, Lief Liebmann, and other musicians. In order to make every CD special, we plan on including original artwork inside the cover of each CD. Our goal is to have five hundred art pieces by July 31, 2010.

Selected cards will be exhibited in Katterbach Germany for the 9-11 memorial ceremony. These will be shown in conjunction with the traveling Reflections of Generosity exhibit.

Copyright protection is automatic and begins when the work is created, but to fully protect your interests, you need to register your copyright with the Copyright office in order to sue for copyright infringement and to sue for statutory damages and attorney fees.

A tattoo artist can register his work for a copyright.

To be copyrighted, a work must be “fixed” and “original.” “Fixed” means that the work has been embodied in a form that is sufficiently permanent or stable long enough that it may be perceived, reproduced, or communicated. “Original” means the work was not copied from another and the work was more than merely trivial.

If the customer and the tattoo artist together create the design, they may be co-owners of the copyright.

If a tattoo artist has copyrighted the tattoo design you choose to have etched on your body, then the fact that the artist permanently affixes his copyrighted design on your body does not transfer to you the rights protected by copyright. Nor does that transfer ownership of any part of your body to the tattoo artist. That is because ownership of a copyright, or of any of the exclusive rights under a copyright, is distinct from ownership of any material object in which the work is embodied.

If you and the tattoo artist, or other owner of the copyright, sign an agreement transferring the copyright to you, then you own the copyright.

In recent cases, some have argued that the customer owned the copyright because the tattoo was a “work for hire”. If a work is made for hire, the employer (other person for whom the work was prepared) is considered the author for purposes of copyright, and owns all of the rights protected by copyright, unless the parties have expressly agreed otherwise in a written contract signed by them.

However, the legal definition likely excludes tattoos from work for hire. A ‘work made for hire’ is—(1) a work prepared by an employee within the scope of his or her employment; or (2) a work specially ordered or commissioned for use as a contribution to a collective work, as a part of a motion picture or other audiovisual work, as a translation, as a supplementary work, as a compilation, as an instructional text, as a test, as answer material for a test, or as an atlas, if the parties expressly agree in a written instrument signed by them that the work shall be considered a work made for hire.

This definition seems to exclude a traditional tattoo from “works for hire”. First, the tattoo artist is not by definition an employee of the customer. The tattoo artist is likely an independent contractor hired by the customer. An independent contractor would create “a work specially ordered or commissioned”. And a traditional tattoo does not fit into any of the categories listed above for “a work specially ordered or commissioned”.

If you are a customer and you want the copyright to your tattoo, there are options.

1. Use a contract before getting tattooed, describing your contribution and either listing you as co-author or transferring ownership from the tattoo artist or tattoo parlor to you. Hire a lawyer to do this properly. The agreement should use the word “copyright” and say all “ownership” in the tattoo and any drawing, sketch, and other work that becomes or embodies the tattoo vests in, belongs to, and is transferred in whole to the customer.

2. Check the Copyright Office for any copyright registrations naming the Tattoo artist or assigned to the tattoo business. If a copyright covers the tattoo, you can ask the artist or business to transfer ownership.

3. Copyright the tattoo yourself. Preferably before being tattooed.

SCARS NJAC Showcase and Art Exhibiit - May 26th, 2010

On May 26, 2010, NJ Arts Collaborative (NJAC) will host our sixth annual showcase featuring visual and performing artists from around the Garden State. Entitled SCARS: Striving to Create Art that Heals, Renews, and Strengthens, this year’s event focuses on the restorative power of the arts and will be held at 7:00PM on Wednesday, May 26, at Crossroads Theatre in New Brunswick.

SCARS includes a gallery exhibit with pieces by fine artists and a stage show with performances by professional dancers, singers, actors, and musicians.

Artists’ Reception Saturday, May 15th from 7 – 10 pm

The Mix, Imagine Long Branch, and the Long Branch Arts Council are pleased to announce the opening of “Pixels & Paint,” an art show curated by Monmouth Beach painter ellen martin. Photographers Geri Gray and joAnn lense, and ellen martin will be exhibiting recent work at the show. You are warmly welcome to come and meet them at the artists’ reception on Saturday, May 15^th from 7 – 10 pm. It will be upstairs at the Mix Lounge, 71 Brighton Avenue, Long Branch, NJ. If you can’t make the opening and would like to see the show another time, please call 703-868-2833. The show will close on Monday, May 24.

Admission to the show is free. Complimentary light snacks are being graciously provided by Karyn Jarmer of My Kitchen Witch in Monmouth Beach; and by Sam Nativo and Michael Bienz, owners of the Mix Lounge. There will also be a cash bar featuring reduced-rate specialty drinks.

Geri Gray, of Ocean Grove, will be presenting pieces from her mannequin series as well as some sharp street scenes. joAnn lense will be showing photographs from her newest body of work, “The New Topographics.” ellen martin will be showing her latest small abstract paintings. Both photographers have been working at their craft for many years, while artist ellen martin started painting in December of ’08. All work presented will be affordable and may even have good investment potential as all three artists are still in the emerging phases of their careers, and have had work recognized by respected judges.

Background Information

joAnn lense started studying photography in her early teens. In her own words, she is a photographer because, “I foresee movement, a moment, an emotion prior to its existence; because I am able to anticipate the motion of a tree, a brook, a blade of grass; and because I see beauty in what others perceive as ugly. I am a photographer because I anticipate light, shadow, odor and presence. I am a photographer because that is who I am.” joAnn’s work is in numerous private collections, as well as in the Getty Images database.

Geri Gray studied photography at Brookdale Community College after her retirement from a local medical center in the ‘90’s, and she switched to digital photography in 2007. Says Geri, “Photography satisfies me. The camera gives me confidence and is a tool for my relaxation. The excitement is in the "hunt," to find that one composition that has not yet been captured and then present it in an exciting and colorful manner for others to see.”

ellen martin observes her creative development with bemusement and glee.

Both joAnn lense and Geri Gray had work accepted into the “Edgy to Avant-Garde” show earlier this year at the Guild of Creative Art, which was juried by Doug Ferrari of SICA. They were both also juried into the 2010 “EyeSights” photography show at the Guild by Ricardo Barros, and where Geri won an Honorable Mention for “Express Yourself.” ellen martin’s “Circles,” was juried into the Monmouth Museum by Maura Lynch of the MoMA.

All three artists are members of the Guild of Creative Art and the Belmar Arts Council. ellen martin also works with the Organization of Puerto Rican Artists and is a member of SICA, the Art Alliance of Monmouth County, the Monmouth County Arts Council, and the Monmouth Museum. joAnn lense is a member of the Art Alliance of Monmouth County, and SICA. Geri Gray is a member of the Monmouth Camera Club, the Photographic Society of America and the National Association of Photoshop Professionals.

Monmouth County Arts Council Announces the Arts Education Awards (Red Bank, NJ) The Monmouth County Arts Council announces the Arts Education Awards to be held at Two River Theater Company, Bridge Street, Red Bank, on Monday May 17, 2010 from 6-8:00 pm. An annual event, this is an exciting evening for students, parents, teachers and community arts supporters to come together to acknowledge the power of art education and to honor the awardees. The Monmouth County Arts Council established the Arts Education Awards to recognize and celebrate Leaders in Arts Education, Community Arts Education Leaders and Community Champions of the Arts, tho se individuals and organizations who support the council's mission of "enriching the community by inspiring and fostering the arts." This year, one Leader in Arts Education is Mychelle Kendrick, visual arts teacher, Wall High School, who is an educator, creator and dynamic promoter/organizer/motivator for all of the arts at Wall High School. She has created an atmosphere of art learning in her classroom for all students all the time. The Visual and Performing Arts Department (VPA) of Red Bank Regional High School drama teacher Joe Russo will also be honored as a Leader in Arts Education for his commitment to excellence in drama. He has been teaching Theater at RBRVPA since 1983 when the program began. Dan Green will receive a Leader in Arts Education as an Arts Administrator as Supervisor of the innovative Fine and Performing Arts Center (FPAC) of Freehold Regional School District, at Howell High School. The FPAC program includes acting, dance and entertainment technology and celebrated its 25th anniversary last year. One Community Champion of the Arts is Monmouth University in recognition of its support to revitalize the State Teen Arts Festival, and especially the efforts of President Gaffney in bringing the festival to Monmouth University the last week of May. The second Community Champion of the Arts is New Jersey Natural Gas for their long time support of the Monmouth County Teen Arts Festival.
The third award category is Community Arts Education Leaders. A collaboration between VSA New Jersey and ARC of Monmouth County, Red Horse Gallery, offers "life long learning in the arts for people with disabilities" and will be honored as a Community Arts Education Leader for its ongoing educational programs and gallery opportunities in the arts. The Two River Theater Company's education programs, led by Kate Cordaro, Director of Arts Education, will receive recognition for a program that "embraces the power of creativity with the philosophy that art changes lives". Vernacular Photography refers to images taken by anonymous photographers, using everyday objects, people, and scenes as their subject. These photos are considered “accidental art” in that they are often unintentionally artistic. Vernacular photos can be collected “as is”, or used to create compelling new works of art.

On Friday, May 7^th at 7:00 p.m., Steve Bannos – actor, comedian, writer, and internationally renowned dealer of Vernacular Photography – will appear at the Toms River Branch of the Ocean County Library. Best known for his portrayal of teacher Frank Kowchevski on NBC’s Freaks and Geeks, Bannos has also appeared in the films Superbad, Unaccompanied Minors, and The 40-Year-Old Virgin. His skills as a Hollywood copywriter have earned him the nickname of “the Comedy Doctor”, and his Vernacular Photography collection – which currently numbers over 825,000 snapshots – has appeared in books, museums, films, album covers, and private art collections worldwide. This is an outdoor festival celebrating live music, dance, visual arts and fine crafts of our region.

About the Event:

We encourage emerging artists as well as those with established reputations to participate in this juried show. There is an abundant amount of talent within our town limits, as well as in the county and throughout the state. The purpose of the exhibit is not only to sell art, but to also showcase the talent of local artists, and to enlighten and delight the general public. Prizes will be awarded the day of the show for Best in Show, 2^nd place, 3^rd place and honorable mention. Judging is the day of the event.

To be considered for the jury process, artists are required to submit two images by email.

All work submitted must be available for sale and must be original work by the artist (limited edition prints by the artist are also acceptable). There are a finite number of spaces available and only the highest quality work will be selected for participation. Submission of work is not a guarantee of acceptance into the show.

About the Juror:

Artist Virginia Perle maintains her studio in Toms River near the scenes and activities that have become the inspiration of her many paintings. She has been painting most of her life and was formally educated in fine art at Montclair State College and with many renowned watercolorists. She has taught watercolor and oil painting but now concentrates on her own work. Ginny has exhibited in the Rotunda of the House of Representatives office building in Washington, DC and at the Statehouse in Trenton in a summer-long one-artist exhibit. Her work is included in the popular books “To the Shore Once More”, Vol. 1 & 11, the cover and prints in the book “A Cats a Century Tradition” and “LBI Rhapsody.” Ginny has art and illustrations in the magazine Jersey Shore and an article of her work in Shore Life magazine. Her home and studio are on Money Island, TomsRiver.

ArtsCAP, the Arts Coalition of Asbury Park is on the look out for the artistically inclined. The non-profit group seeks logo design submissions for its upcoming CityArts/Asbury Park festival. The logo design contest is open to professionals, amateurs and students and the winner will receive a $100 cash prize.

CityArts/AsburyPark, a full weekend celebration of the arts in Asbury Park, NJ, is set for September 24-25, 2010. The festival will be a multi media, multi arts event featuring the work of local and national artists in all the disciplines. The city’s many non-profit arts groups, arts businesses, and individual artists are expected to participate, according to ArtsCAP president, Dennis Carroll.

CityArts/AsburyPark will be centered around an arts walk or tour from Main Street, though the downtown shopping district, south along Wesley Lake and east to the oceanfront boardwalk. It will feature art exhibitions; music, theater and dance performances; street art fair; film showings; spoken word and literary events and art installations. The festival will embrace a wide spectrum of artistic styles and media.

Logo Designs must include:
The words: CityArts (one word as written) and Asbury Park or AsburyPark. The words may be connected or separate but must be in this order: CityArts followed by Asbury Park. Asbury Park may be in a smaller size.

A graphic or graphic elements that depict or express multi media/multi arts and/or the City of Asbury Park. These may be pictographic, symbolic or abstract. The committee is looking for dynamic, inventive, and arresting expressions of the festival.

The logo should work at both larger and smaller scales (without loss of detail). It will be
used on signage, programs, and t-shirts and be displayed in a variety of media formats including print, digital and video.

Designs may be submitted in either PDF, TIFF. PSD, AI, or vector EPS, Document size about 11 inches. Winning design will need to be capable of being rendered in vector EPS with fonts as outlines and in both CMYK and RGB versions for both print and web.

All entries will become the property of ArtsCAP. ArtsCAP reserves the right to make any adaptations for reproduction purposes to the prize winning design or to substitute its own design in place of the prize winning design.

Dates and Deadlines:
All entries must be submitted to info@artscap.org and must be received by midnight, April 30, 2010. Designs must be attached to email messages, not embedded. Message line must read: “CITYARTS LOGO CONTEST”

All entries must identify the designer(s) by name, category (professional, amateur, student), mailing address, telephone number, and email address. Parental consent must accompany any submissions by individuals under the age of 18.

The winner will be notified by phone or e-mail on or before May 3, 2010. The winner will receive a $100 cash prize. Decision of the judges will be final.

An unveiling event will be held in Asbury Park on May 6 to announce the winner (location to be announced).

Monmouth Festival of the Arts turns 40!

The show pre-opens on Saturday, April 17 at 7:30 pm with a spectacular ruby-studded Gala in honor of its 40th anniversary at the Monmouth Reform Temple on Hance Avenue in Tinton Falls. It continues through to Wednesday, April 21. Area art lovers can enjoy the variety of art on display and for sale from more than 250 artists who hail from all over the Northeast. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and students. Gala tickets are $60 in advance and $65 at the door and entitle the patron to return to the Festival throughout its duration. Hours of operation are noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday and 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday."

throwing a small secret smile to a pretty girl along his route,

Donald Sutherland's Paul Gauguin might be returning in triumph

from his two years in Tahiti. But the hat is ratty as well as natty,

the way his paintings are loaded on the cart being trundled before

him hints that not everybody considers them masterpieces,

and his eyes carry anxiety as well as arrogance. We soon learn that he

has only four francs in his pocket.

The New Jersey Emerging Artists Series is an important and integral part of our programming at the Monmouth Museum, and we are delighted to provide this unique opportunity for artists to showcase their work. We are currently accepting entries for our Summer and Fall 2010 Series, and have extended our deadline for submissions to April 2nd. The New Jersey Emerging Artists Series consists of six annual monthly solo exhibitions to showcase the new work of NJ artists who have not previously held one-person exhibitions in our State. Selected artists are guided through the exhibition process, provided promotional materials and are encouraged to give an artist's talk during their exhibition to further increase their visibility.
Eligibility: The exhibition is open to any artist currently living in New Jersey who is 18 years of age or older and has not previously held a one-person exhibition in this State. This includes solo exhibitions in any public venue where work was exhibited for a period over 3 weeks, was publicized in the media, and was accompanied by an opening reception. Artwork will be considered in all media, but must be wall-mountable. Selected artists will be chosen from digital images submitted on a CD.

Congressional Art Competition 2010

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman John Adler announced that he is now accepting submissions for the 2010 Congressional Art Competition. The competition is part of the nationwide annual Congressional Art Competition intended to showcase the artistic talents and abilities of students across the country.

The winner will have their artwork featured in the U.S. Capitol, attend an awards ceremony on June 17, 2010 in Washington, D.C., and receive a partial scholarship to the Savannah College of Art and Design.

"I encourage local high school students to participate in this year's Congressional Art Competition," said Congressman Adler. "I am always impressed by the talent of our local students. I look forward to proudly displaying the winning submissions in Washington and New Jersey."

Congressman Adler named Ashley Mayers, a student from Forked River, NJ, the grand prize winner of last year's competition for her portrait of a soldier's homecoming.

The contest is open to all high school students who reside in the 3rd Congressional District, which includes parts of Burlington, Camden and Ocean counties. Artwork is due by May 7, 2010 and can be submitted at either of Congressman Adler's district offices.

Additional guidelines for the Congressional Art Competition include:

Piece must be two-dimensional
Each piece can be no larger than 30 inches by 30 inches to the outside dimensions of the frame
No more than 4 inches in depth
Pieces can be submitted in several categories, including paintings, drawings, prints, and mixed media.

Matthew Gibbon, liberal lion and university president, may have finally gone too far in his battle against the conservative Dean of the law school, his son-in-law and former protégé. His daughter is caught between them and the entire university community is up in arms. The personal and political collide in this stunning contemporary drama about loyalty, power, and torture memos.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
Charlotte Gibbon: A fiercely talented lawyer in her mid-thirties. Charlotte has in the last few years developed an intense, focused coolness in almost everything she does. At seemingly inexplicable intervals, though, her dispassionate sense of control swings suddenly from icy detachment to a quiet, mournful vulnerability.

Matthew Gibbon: Charlotte’s father, President of a small private East Coast university. An imposing man in his sixties, Matthew is bullish, charismatic and enthusiastic to the point of childishness. His quick moodiness and even quicker ebullience are often undermined by his almost comic incompetence with things mechanical and practical; the mark of a man who has been doted over all his life.

Vincent Krieger: Charlotte’s husband, mid to late thirties, Matthew’s former protégé, Dean of the university’s law school. It is immediately apparent why both Charlotte and in many respects, Matthew, have fallen in love with Vincent; he is the sort who quickly becomes, with little effort of his own, the center of gravity in any room he enters. He is at once genuine, charismatic, physically imposing, and humbly brilliant. Forged in the dog-eat-dog world of academia, he can also be, when pushed, a seasoned and brutal in-fighter.

Maryanne (a.k.a. Midge, Midgie, Mimi): A prickly, refusing-to-be-frail, native northeasterner in her late 60's, Maryanne has acted in many capacities for the Gibbon family over the past three decades, most notably as Matthew’s able Executive Assistant.

The South Jersey Shore Clay Tour will be held from March 29 – 31st, with a possible bus tour on Wednesday, the 31st. The tour will be self-guided throughout the eleven sites in the state starting in Collingswood,and then wrap up with Long Beach Island's m.t.burton gallery and Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences. All the venues will be hosting an exhibition or have an open clay studio.

There's always a woman somewhere, child; a princess, a witch, a stepmother, a mermaid, a fairy godmother, or one as wicked as she is beautiful, or as beautiful as she is good. Is that the complete list? Then there is the woman you love. Who's she? That's another story.” – Jeanette Winterson
Linnea Tober’s “Mermaids”, an exhibition of her most recent acrylic/mixed-media paintings, will open at the Red Horse Gallery in the Freehold Raceway Mall, on March 22. The opening reception will be held Wednesday, March 24, from 6-8pm; serving GLUTEN-FREE, home-made baked goods in order to promote Celiac’s Disease awareness, a disease which Ms. Tober has and feel s passionate about educating the general public about.
Ms. Tober describes her work as such: “I enjoy focusing on the strengths, beauty, layers of emotion and the sheer mystery and magic of the female form. These aspects are apparent to me every single day. After all, aren’t we all goddesses, faeries, gypsies, mermaids, maidens, sirens, enchantresses, mothers, lovers, and friends? My work consists of many layers, layers of color and textures, but mainly layers of meaning. I have a somewhat surrealistic style and strive to capture multitudes of expressions and emotions. Yes, I am an artist, and I have a responsibility to bring beauty into the world; but much more than that, to make people think and feel in ways they might not have otherwise been able to do. My own struggles with chronic pain and fatigue in dealing with endometriosis, arthritis and celiac’s disease have made me all the more compassionate and aware of what it is like to live with illness and just how healing art can be. This has turned my artwork to focusing on many women’s health issues, and hopefully putting a positive, peaceful and uplifting spin on the fight.” Besides the beautiful colors and layering of paint, it is her exact and precise applications of ‘mixed-media’ materials that make her Mermaids truly stand out; items such as beads, feathers, text and jewels make their way into her works in surprising and interesting ways. Furthermore, having been born and raised in the small seaside town of Monmouth Beach; her love and deep respect for the ocean are ingrained in her being. There is no doubt, the sea air in her blood, and these works absolutely depict that passion.
The exhibition will run from March 22-May 14 at the Red Horse Gallery, Freehold, NJ. The Gallery is located inside the Freehold Raceway Mall, on the upper level, next to Sears. The gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10am-4:30pm, and by appointment, the phone number is (732) 866-0435.
Background Information:
An established and exhibiting artist since 1994, New Jersey native Linnea Tober has exhibited extensively on the state level, with works exhibited at the Monmouth Museum, Shore Institute of the Contemporary Arts, The Art Alliance in Red Bank, the Guild of Creative Arts in Shrewsbury, The Monmouth Festival of the Arts, Brookdale Community College, and most recently, a solo show at The Monmouth Beach Cultural Center. Ms. Tober is a member of the Art Alliance, MCAC, The Guild of Creative Art, Belmar Arts Council, Freehold Artist Guild, Artscap, and SICA. She has had over 13 solo shows throughout Monmouth and Ocean counties, and exhibited in over twenty juried shows as well. BUS TRIP TO THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE IN NYC
The TV class at the SCAN Adult Continuing Education Center, located in Monmouth Mall, will be taking a bus trip the the American Museum of the Moving Image in New York City on Friday March 26. The program will include a private tour of the museum plus special activities for the group. The group will learn about the history as well as modern film & video techniques.
The cost of the trip, which includes the bus and museum admission, is $35. The bus is a full size coach with an on-board toilet facility. It will leave SCAN at 8:30 AM and return around 3 PM. Lunch is “brown bag” and will be eaten while on the bus. On- going expansion work has temporarily closed their food service at the museum.

The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences (LBIF) is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to promoting current trends in the arts and sciences through exhibitions, classes, and programs. Located on a picturesque barrier island off the coast of New Jersey, the LBIF hosts approximately 30,000 visitors each summer.

About the Exhibition:
The LBIF encourages emerging artists as well as those with established reputations to participate in the National Juried Competition. The purpose of this exhibition is to showcase contemporary works of art created through digital processes that reflect innovative use of media, technical excellence, and personal vision. Works submitted may be two-dimensional, three-dimensional, or virtual. All entries must be original and must have been executed since 2007.

Marisa Olson is an artist, curator, and media theorist. Her critiques of contemporary art and digital visual culture have extended to writing for Flash Art, Art Review, Afterimage, Planet, and Art on Paper, and to curating exhibitions at the Guggenheim, SFMOMA, White Columns, Artists Space, SF Camerawork, and Rhizome. Her work has recently been presented by the Whitney Museum of American Art, Centre Pompidou-Paris, New Museum of Contemporary Art, 52nd International Biennale di Venezia, National Museum of Contemporary Art (Greece), the British Film Institute, the Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive, and the Sundance Film Festival.

Sitting or reclining, crossed legged or straight legged, sitting down or sitting on a high chair, squatting, being in the HOT SEAT, flying BY THE SEAT OF YOUR PANTS, or being ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT. Many phrases describe the act of sitting. How do crafthaus artists interpret this? We would like to show examples of the act of "sitting" and leave this open to interpretation. Our idea is to show actual chairs, benches, couches and other seating objects AS WELL AS artwork that references and plays with the act of sitting or any meaning thereof. Work in ALL MEDIA ENCOURAGED!

All selected work will be part of an online exhibition. The exhibit is open to all members of Craft haus and will be posted for one month. There is no entry fee and includes no monetary awards.

ELIGIBILITY:
To be eligible, submitted work must be designed and made by the artist. No work made from kits will be considered. We are looking for work that would be at home in an art gallery.

SUBMISSION PROCESS:
1. Images: You may submit up to 5 pieces for consideration, each piece may be
represented by 1-2 images, a full view and a detail.
Include on each file image: your last name and title of the piece.
Ex:Smith_Tribeca_Chair.jpg
Size of image:medium size images work best on Craft haus. Send 300 x 400.jpg
format.

2. On a Word document:
a. List of materials
b. Dimensions in height x width x depth
c. Please include a maximum of 1-2 sentences about each furniture piece.
d. Contact information for us.

About the Curators: Glen Guarino, Guarino Furniture Designs has a MA in Studio Furniture. He taught on the high school level for 32 years & has been an adjunct professor in the Fine Arts School at William Paterson University since 2001. Glen has been designing & making furniture since 1978. Some of his recent publications are in Fine Woodworking, 500 Tables by Lark & Studio Furniture from Today's leading Woodworkers is a Schiffer book. Glen has also been the subject of several articles & has appeared on TV. He exhibits in galleries & museums.
Marie taught Home Economics in inner city schools & has been helping Glen with his business for a number of years as his art agent...

This year the Monmouth Museum and the MCAC will co-present the 31st Annual Juried
Art Exhibition in the Museum's Main Gallery from January 17 through February 21, 2010.
Through increased participation, the Museum hopes to continue and expand upon this
excellent presentation of visual art for the benefit of the community.
The Monmouth Museum and the MCAC are pleased to announce a Call for Entries
for the 31st Annual Juried Art Exhibition. Artwork will be considered in all media, except
film/video. Selected artists will be chosen from digital images submitted on a CD.
The images must represent the artwork which will be exhibited if you are selected.
All artwork must have been produced within the last five years,
and not previously exhibited in past MCAC Juried Exhibitions.

Provides Glimpse of the Past and the Future

Join our pre-Halloween festivities on October 16th, 6:30 PM, at the OCHS Museum on 26 Hadley Avenue, Toms River. Bring your flashlight for a Candlelight Graveyard Tour where you’ll meet some Ocean County residents of the past. Tarot Card Readings will be offered at the Museum.
